Cold Hands

Released May 30, 2026

Cold Hands was written in a burst of creativity before work one morning. The song arrived more quickly and fully formed than most, and the recording followed a similar path. The arrangement came together naturally over a handful of sessions at Hand Me Down Recordings in Oakland with producer Adam Myatt.

For Cold Hands, Matt returned to an unfinished lithograph he had begun earlier that year. After hearing the finished recording, he completed the piece by layering reds, pinks, and blacks over its vibrant yellow glow. It became the second piece in our ongoing collaboration.

Cold Hands was released alongside an East Bay Express feature that chronicled Winter Stanley's return to recording and introduced Hand Me Down Recordings to a wider audience. It marked another step in an ongoing series of singles documenting a new creative chapter.

The Drift

Released February 14, 2026

The Drift marked the beginning of a new chapter in Winter Stanley's recording project with producer Adam Myatt at Hand Me Down Recordings in Oakland. Built around acoustic guitar and layered with electric guitars, bass, drums, and subtle keyboards, the arrangement gradually found its shape over several recording sessions. The recording also features pedal steel by Jody Clark, whose melodic playing became an integral part of the song's atmosphere.

The cover artwork marked the beginning of an ongoing collaboration with artist Matthew Troy Mullins. Rather than creating a traditional album cover, Matt stitched together two photographs after hearing the finished recording, creating an image that reflected the feeling of the song. What began with The Drift became an ongoing collaboration, with each new release pairing a song with an original work by Mullins.

Released as a standalone single, The Drift established the approach of allowing each song to exist as its own complete work, with its own artwork, story, and identity. It marked the beginning of an ongoing series of singles documenting Winter Stanley's evolving collaborations with Adam Myatt and Matthew Troy Mullins.

Hand Me Down Recordings Singles No. 3

Released November 15, 2025

Hand Me Down Recordings Singles No. 3 marked Winter Stanley's return to recording after years away from the studio. Produced by Adam Myatt at Hand Me Down Recordings in Oakland, the two-song release paired Waves and The Trees Are Torches and established a creative partnership that would continue through a series of standalone singles.

The recordings were intentionally understated, allowing the songs to lead the production. More than simply documenting two new recordings, the project became the foundation for an evolving collaboration between Stanley and Myatt—one built on careful arrangements, patience, and a shared belief that each song should discover its own sound rather than fit a predetermined style.

The release also marked the beginning of Winter Stanley's return to performing and recording as a solo artist. Rather than waiting to complete a full album, the decision was made to release songs individually, giving each recording the time and attention to stand on its own. That approach has continued with every subsequent release.
